Here's a bombshell: President Lincoln signed the legislation to establish the Secret Service on the very day he was shot. Unfortunately, the program didn't have the kinds of responsibilities it does today, so it wouldn't have helped Lincoln even if it had existed earlier. Even still, Lincoln had a bodyguard.
