Scientists have discovered that trapping water in tiny channels gives you some pretty strange results. In April 2016, researchers discovered that water has a quantum state, which means a single particle can be in two positions at once. This occurs when a water molecule is in a "quantum tunneling state," as the researchers from the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory describe. When water is trapped sitting in tiny spaces within minerals, known as "tunneling," water molecules exhibit strange behaviors, unlike those of any solid, liquid or gas. One of the researchers stated in a press release that "this tunneling water exhibits quantum motion through the separating potential walls, which is forbidden in the classical world." This is the first time such behavior has ever been observed, but it is still unclear how the discovery can be used.
