Beginner tip for grocery shoppers: The refrigerator isn't always the best choice for keeping produce fresh. In fact, these foods are better left at room temperature: Bananas, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, citrus, eggplant, mangoes, melons, onions, potatoes, and pineapples. But some foods need special care. Mushrooms, for example, should be kept inside a paper bag in the fridge to protect them from humidity. Anything that is misted at the supermarket should be stored in the humidity drawers. And for dairy items that need to be refrigerated, they will stay the coolest if kept towards the back of the shelf.
