Listen to These Commercial Pilots Report a Possible UFO Sighting Mid-Flight

We're not one to buy into conspiracy theories, but we can admit when there's a fun story. And this is a fun one for sure. In February 2018, two commercial airline pilots in separate planes reported seeing ... something fly a few thousand feet overhead. Was it a UFO? Well, we'll let you listen for yourself.

It's Not a Bird! It's Not a Plane!

The last last thing you probably want to think about during your average, everyday, run-of-the-mill domestic flight is the possibility of colliding with a UFO. We're here to tell you that's something you don't have to worry about, but if you were listening in on some cockpit convos while flying over the southwest in February 2018, you might get freaked out. On February 24th, a Learjet pilot and an American Airlines pilot reportedly saw, uh, something. They chatted with Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center about a mysterious encounter during the trip from San Diego to Dallas.

Here's a little taste of the unusual conversation that occurred:

"Was anybody above us that passed us like 30 seconds ago?" the Learjet pilot asked air traffic control.

"Negative," responded the air traffic controller.

"Okay, something did," the pilot said.

"A UFO!" interjected another voice.

"Yeah," the pilot laughed.

A few minutes later, the air traffic controller communicated a brief warning to an American Airlines plane that was flying in the area. Here's how the second half of the story went down:

"American 1095, let me know if you see anything pass over you here in the next, uh, 15 miles," said the air traffic controller.

"Let you know if anything passes over?" the AA pilot responded after a little hesitation.

"American 1095, affirmative," the controller said. "We had an aircraft in front of you that reported something pass over him and we didn't have any targets. So just let me know if you see anything pass over you."

"Alright," the pilot said.

After a few minutes, the AA pilot reported seeing something mysterious to the air traffic controller.

"It's American 1095. Yeah, something just passed over us. I don't know what it was, but at least two, three thousand feet above us. Yeah, it passed right over the top of us," said the AA pilot.

2 Commercial Pilots Had A Close Encounter With A Possible UFO Over Arizona

I Want to Believe

To add to the drama and mystery of the ordeal, the sightings happened near Roswell, New Mexico — you know, that favorite place of alien conspiracy theorists? But authorities put all the creative theories to rest, confirming to everyone that the object was ... drumroll please ... a weather balloon. "Other than the brief conversation between two aircraft, the controller was unable to verify that any other aircraft was in the area," an FAA spokesman told Inverse. "We have a close working relationship with a number of other agencies and safely handle military aircraft and civilian aircraft of all types in that area every day, including high-altitude weather balloons."

According to CNN, the AA pilot wasn't sure what he saw was a weather balloon. He described it to the air traffic controller as having "a big reflection," and "going the opposite direction." What do you think?
