How Do Cities Get Their Nicknames?

Does the city you live in have a nickname? Many famous cities around the world have gained nicknames as popular as the official names themselves. For instance, Rome is known as "The Eternal City." The nickname originates from archaeological evidence found in the area that suggest Rome has been occupied for nearly 14,000 years. The nickname for Louisiana's iconic New Orleans is "The Big Easy." Although the origin of the nickname is not confirmed, it may be due to the fact that it is easy for jazz musicians to land gigs there, or perhaps during prohibition when the whole city was like one huge speakeasy.
