A new article offers a potential explanation as to why we take pleasure from the misfortune of other people, a feeling known as schadenfreude. This common, yet poorly understood, emotion may provide a valuable window into the darker side of humanity, the review article suggests.The review draws upon evidence from three decades of social, developmental, personality, and clinical research to devise a novel framework to systematically explain schadenfreude.
