It's impossible to pinpoint exactly when in history humans first domesticated animals. However, research has found that anywhere from 13,000 to 30,000 years ago Fido and Fluffy were just starting off as pets. Ancient depictions of cats, camels, dogs, sheep and more can be found on Egyptian hieroglyphics. And although cats and dogs are the most common pets, birds, snakes and even rats are all acceptable exotic alternatives in modern times.
