Roughin' it in the wild is a time-honored bonding tradition. Though the idea of camping may conjure up childhood images of ol' gramps busting out the fishing lines, there's a modern interest in camping that's on the rise. According to a 2017 survey, the desire to camp is growing among people in North America of all ages and backgrounds. Call the crew and pack the van, ya'll. You in?

Sorry, This Campsite Is Full

Haven't you heard? Camping is so hot right now. Turns out, more North Americans are itching to sleep under the stars. An annual consumer survey compiled some fascinating findings. More than one million additional U.S. households have started camping each year since 2014. Between 2014 and 2017, that's a total of 3.4 million people. To put that in perspective, think of the entire population of Los Angeles. Phew, that's a lot of new tents. The people pushing the trend upwards include a wider range of ages (yes, even tech-addicted teens) and ethnicities than ever. Getting in touch with nature really is for everyone.

"We're seeing that once these younger campers experience the outdoors and the benefits of camping, they become hooked on it and it becomes part of their lifestyle. As parents bring their children along, we're already seeing their love of camping being passed on to the next generation," said KOA COO Toby O'Rourke.

Let's Get Physical

Why the growing interest? Camping entails a whole lot more than just hanging out away from home inside a tent. (Well, it can be that, if you really want it to be.) It's also great exercise. According to the 2017 Physical Activity Council report, camping tops the list for being the most aspirational physical activity for the second year in a row. In every age group from 6 through 24 and 35 through 64, camping was ranked as the number-one physical activity people aspired to take part in. It even beat out basketball, football, bicycling, fishing, and jogging as a more appealing way to get some exercise. So, where will you pitch your next tent?
