An Introduction to Your Nervous System

Your nervous system is the sum of many parts. At the center of it all sits your brain, a powerhouse containing billions of nerve cells that fire off complex electrical messages to keep your body safe and healthy as best they can. Your spinal cord runs the length of your back, and connects your peripheral nervous system—the collections of nerve cells around your body—to your brain, ensuring that your entire nervous network is hooked up to the grid.

It's incredibly important, and incredibly complex. Without a functioning nervous system, you would struggle to do most things—which is why injuries to the spinal cord or brain can be so serious. From the photoreceptors in your eyes, to the neurons in your prefrontal cortex, every day your nervous system does everything it can to help you survive and thrive.
