A parrot has shown us perhaps the most extraordinary demonstration of non-human intelligence thus far. Alex the African grey parrot was the first non-human animal to seemingly ask an existential question. The bird, who had a vocabulary of more than 100 words, could identify shapes, colors, quantities up to about eight, materials, and more. This parrot once looked in the mirror and asked "What color?" Its handlers told him grey, but he kept asking the question. This suggested that Alex was asking a deep question pondering his own existence.
