Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier's death was actually the first known fatality in an air crash. Centuries before, however, Ismail ibn Hammad al-Jawhari perished while attempting to fly. The wooden wings and rope he used could not keep him aloft, and he died after jumping off the roof of a mosque in Nishapur.
