Incredible Temples Around The World

This learning path has been created for you.
Playlist Description

The path to Angkor Wat is peaceful and serene, surrounded by lush and vibrant grass and trees, and is sprinkled with reflection ponds along the way. Once you arrive at the berth of the 500-acre temple city—a term derived from its name, Angkor—you're greeted by a staggering 213-foot-tall central tower protected by a gentle moat that trails all the way around the 650-foot perimeter. Constructed to pay homage to the Hindu god Vishnu, this ancient mammoth of a temple still stands in modern day Cambodia. Travel the world, and you'll find hundreds of both similar and vastly unique vestiges of loyalty to religious, political and spiritual leaders in the form of elaborate temples. The oldest known temple to date is the Turkish Gobekli Tepe temple believed to be built more than 11,500 years ago. The remaining walls are filled with pictograms and engravings of animals, plants and other life forms thought to be sacred to the region's gods. In Beijing, China sits the Temple of Heaven, where grand stone staircases represent a pilgrimage to heaven, while all the life below symbolized all that was sacred on Earth. Conversely, the temple at Wat Rong Khun is decorated with tortured human arms and hands reaching up from the afterlife below.

From the mountains and foothills of Asia, to the towering and sturdy temples of Greece, these architectural monuments have served as places of gather for thousands of years. While many have perished over the course of history, many have withstood the test of time and remain in use or as tourist attractions. Travel through this playlist and witness some of the most beautiful structures of all time.

We drove a few miles north from Honolulu to the Byodo-in Temple. It was built in 1968 to commemorate the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. Its a replica of a 900 year-old Japanese Temple. Its five foot high, three-ton brass bell is similar to the one in Japan. Its rung before entering the temple. Its tranquil grounds are a welcome counterpoint to the charged atmosphere of Waikiki.

Researchers from the Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap have recently discovered over 200 hidden paintings on the walls of the Angkor Wat temple complex that date to around the 16th century. The ancient Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia is the largest religious monument in the world, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia with millions of visitors every year. Researchers from the Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap have recently discovered over 200 hidden paintings on the walls of the temple complex that date to around the 16th century. Using a digital image enhancement technique called decorrellation stretch analysis, researchers were able to see the wall paintings, which depict a variety of animals, and the Hindu monkey god Hanuman, along with a musical ensemble scene, dieties, boats, and people riding horses. Noel Hidalgo Tan, a researcher in the College of Asia and the Pacific at Australian National University who also worked on the study is quoted as saying:"A lot of the visible paintings on the walls have been previously discounted as graffiti, and I certainly agree with this interpretation, but there are another set of paintings discovered from this study that are so schematic and elaborate that they are likely not random graffiti, but an attempt to decorate the walls of the temple." The paintings are believed to be from around the time that the temple changed from being used for Vishnavaite Hindu purposes to a center for Theravada Buddhism.

Take a tour of Monkey Temple of Nepal in Nepal -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The Swayambhunath stupa in Nepal is a remarkable place of both natural and man-made wonders. The temple is the crowning point on a high hill in the Kathmandu Valley. Constructed in roughly 5th or 6th century AD, it is often simply called the "Monkey Temple". This is because of the large number of monkeys living in and around the temple. Monkeys aside, the Buddhist sculpture and architecture here is outstanding in its age and elegance. The spire on the top of the stupa is adorned with four pairs of eyes.

Learn about China's Hanging Temple. China is full of architectural gems. A prime example is The Hanging Temple - located in Shanxi province. As the name implies, it simply appears to be hanging in midair, set up high amidst the gorgeous back drop of a mountain. In reality, the temple is supported from wooden pillars which are placed into holes that were cut into the side of the cliff. The structure was constructed more than 1,000 years ago and it stands nearly 250 feet above the ground. The temple itself is more than 160 feet tall. The temple faces a gorgeous valley and serves as a unique tourist attraction. Visitors can walk upwards with the help of a stone walkway. The temple houses more than 40 cabinets, corridors and pavilions, which all connect by both boardwalks and bridges. The interior of the temple contains bronze and iron statues, clay sculptures and stone carvings. The unique layout and location attract visitors but lovers of architecture can appreciate the varying design elements. The temple showcases Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian characteristics.

Take a tour of Temple of Debod in Madrid, Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. It seems nearly out of place in Madrid, a little taste of Egypt in Spain. The Temple of Debod dates back to the 2nd century BC, but in southern Egypt. However, when the Great Dam of Aswan was built, the temple had to be relocated. Egypt donated the entire structure to Spain, where it stands in the Parque del Oeste. This ancient temple is peacefully secluded from the city and open to visitors. The temple looks especially beautiful in the evenings, when the stone structures are lit up.
