How Will The World End?

This learning path has been created for you.
Playlist Description

Technically speaking, there are many ways the world might, or could, end. Imagine waking up to a gigantic and fiery explosion that scorches everything around you in a flash, leaving the entire world in dust form. Or being awoken by a hostile takeover of space aliens. Or possibly even discovering one night Earth was soon to be swallowed whole by a rogue black hole. Asteroids, aliens and space vacuums are all legitimate concerns of scientists and everyday civilians when it comes to how the world might someday end. Although green martians may be the least of our worries, other threats such as pandemic diseases like SARS, earth-shattering volcanic eruptions and overpopulation are very real possibilities. Even the rapid evolution of robot armies who turn against humans is an actual worry.

But which of these possibilities is most probable, and is there anything we can do to prevent it? Most importantly, when do researchers believe the world could realistically end—and could humans survive in a post-apocalyptic world? The burnout of the sun, drying out of oil and dissolving of the ozone layer all pose significant and real threats to life as we know it. This playlist gives you the heads up on just which potential disasters to worry about most (but you're on your own in learning to speak Martian).

We have a limited supply of oil, says Bryce, but we also have a limited supply of Rolex watches. Question: When will we run out of oil? Robert Bryce: Well, I get asked about the question about peak oil a lot and the question is well we have a limited amount of oil yes, we do have a limited amount of oil, we have a limited amount of television cameras and Rolex watches and light bulbs and you name it there is finite number of every thing, my response is the peak oil arguments are okay so what yes we are going to hit a peak oil production at some point in the future when there is no one can predict but the point is that is the prize of oil rises entrepreneurs, innovators are going to come up with new ways to find oil and get it out the ground and further that the issue as that price raises, demand has to stay in balance will supply you can't have more demand than the supply. The price eventually will crush demand at a certain point and they will stay in balance. The good news for the US which I think is people may not say it is good news but we can afford higher oil prices more easily then can say Pakistan or India we are wealthier country, we have more disposable income and so we are going to see as oil or natural gas or any commodity becomes more expensive Rolex watches they are rationed by price and in fact we have rationing by price today on virtually every commodity not every one can eat at 21club, not everyone wears a Rolex. Every thing is rationed by price as energy prizes raise we will see more pronounced rationing by price of energy commodities. And I think that that's inevitable, the good news is that has the price rises will see more innovation and more alternatives come in to the market what ever that may be whether it is batteries and cars or some other liquid fuel not ethanol that may come in to the market. The 2012 Mayan Apocalypse is only a few days away . . . and there are a lot of people wondering if it's going to happen. Sorry to burst your bubble, but (Spoiler Alert) nothing's going to change. The so-called Mayan long count calendar predication of the apocalypse is based a fundamental MISUNDERSTANDING of Mayan calendars and society. It's so far off base that scientific and anthropological experts can dismiss it with laugh. Yet, if it's so fundamentally wrong, why do we keep hearing about it? Why are there movies and news casts and websites dedicated to this non-event? Watch the episode and find out!!!!
