Playlist Description

America the brave. America the beautiful. America the... strange? This great nation of ours is home to some incredible landmarks. Amazing manmade structures like the Empire State Building, the Lincoln Memorial, and Independence Hall sit alongside beautiful natural landmarks like the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and Yosemite Valley, and millions of people flood to see them every year. They are the backbone of America’s tourist economy, and rightly so.

But those incredible, nation-defining landmarks are only half of the story. The other half may be less impressive, but it is just as interesting—America’s strangest landmarks. This is a nation of unique roadside attractions, unlikely landscapes and natural phenomena, and eccentric people doing eccentric things. It’s the weird and wonderful underbelly of America’s tourism scene, and we’ve gathered a few of the strangest together here for you.

Take a tour of Gateway Arch in St. Louis -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. Hi, I am Naomi and I am very excited to show you the world's greatest attractions. The Gateway Arch in St. Louis stands as a testament to the creativity of humankind. At 630 feet, it is the tallest national monument in the United States. You may find it fascinating that the width of the legs at its base is also 630 feet. The cost of building this national historic landmark in the 1960's was 13 million dollars. The beloved arch seems to take on different personas. Its unique shape allows it to meld perfectly into the surrounding landscape. You can even take a tram for an exciting ride to the top of the arch. Symbolizing the country's westward expansion, the Gateway Arch is an iconic landmark. Thank you for watching our travel video series. See you next time.

Traveling along Route 66, just outside of Flagstaff, Arizona is one large hole in the ground --- one of the largest craters left by a meteor. Its hard to imagine what it was like 50,000 years ago as a 150-foot wide mass of iron and nickel came hurtling from space and slammed into this spot at 26,000 miles per hour.

We left a gaggle of Harley riders to take pictures with our borrowed Ferrari and headed into the petrified forest. The forest was studied by famed horticulturalist, Luther Burbank, who lived nearby in Santa Rosa. He discovdered that over three million years ago a volcano near todays Mt. St. Helena, just seven miles away, wiped out the forest. The ash encapsulated the trees and hardened into stone.
